After much speculation, we now have an official trailer for the next Mortal Kombat game. Introducing Mortal Kombat 1.
As rumored, this installment of the franchise will be a reboot.
Just last week, a leak suggested that Mortal Kombat 12 might actually be a remake of Mortal Kombat 1. It was unclear whether it was a remake or a reboot.
The new trailer clarifies that it is indeed a reboot, featuring characters from various eras of the MK universe.
So, it’s confirmed as a reboot!
Before we dive into the details, be sure to check out the amazing trailer:
Mortal Kombat 1
The rumors were true, and the next MK installment will be titled “Mortal Kombat 1”.
In fact, we even correctly predicted the logo in our previous article!
As expected from NetherRealm, the game looks stunning.

Although the trailer only shows cutscenes and finishing moves, the quality of the CG is top-notch.
The mood starts off innocent, almost hinting at a peaceful era.
But things quickly take a turn for the worse.
And the violence… oh, the violence. This trailer holds nothing back.
The fatalities shown are as gory and extreme as you would expect from the latest Mortal Kombat installment. They might even be too much to show on this website!
The trailer doesn’t feature actual gameplay, so we’ll have to look forward to that in the near future.
According to the Mortal Kombat website, this game presents a “reborn Mortal Kombat Universe created by the Fire God Liu Kang”.
“Mortal Kombat 1 ushers in a new era of the iconic franchise with a new fighting system, game modes, and fatalities!”
So it seems like big changes are in store for the Mortal Kombat series.
We’re still uncertain about the extent of these changes, particularly the “new fighting system”, but we can trust that NetherRealm knows what they’re doing.
Release Date and Preorder
Preorders for Mortal Kombat 1 will begin on May 19th at 10am Pacific Time. The worldwide release is set for September 19th, 2023.
The closed beta will take place in August on Playstation 5 and Xbox Series X/S.
In addition to those consoles, Mortal Kombat 1 will also be available on the Steam Store, Epic Games Store, and Nintendo Switch.
What better way to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the Mortal Kombat franchise than with what appears to be its best installment yet!
